GAME DRAWN

NEW ZEALAND V. SURREY HOBBS MAKES A “DUCK” TOURISTS’ GOOD SHOWING FOR a time it looked as if the New Zealanders would win the cricket match against Surrey; but the game ended in a draw. But it was an interestingly close contest. At the end Surrey had two wickets in hand, and needed 25 rnns to win. Luckily for New Zealand Hobbs had been got out early for a “duck.”

By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Friday. YJLfITH a draw seemingly inevitable, the. final day of the match at the Oval opened without vim, though in the first hour there was apparently some in the wicket, on which, as the result of a soaking with dew, the ball occasionally capered. Dempster did not increase his 101. He hesitantly played back to the first ball of the day and tapped it into point's hands. Lowry just managed to top the thousand, then he was out to the tamest catch in the slips. Page played outside a “swinger,” which took his wicket. James soon skied one to mid-on. Thus, in half an hour, four wickets fell for 21. t Blunt and McGirr resorted to forcing tactics, and made 57 in 45 minutes. Both were making delightful cover shots. When Blunt went out to his first weak stroke toward mid-off, the consistent Merritt alone stayed to help McGirr, who hit seven fours during his 110 minutes’ innings. Surrey began in a bad light. At the fourth ball Hobbs was caught at long leg. Sandham and Ducat retrieved, and put on 100 in an hour, till Sandham “dollied” one behind the wicket, i where James was playing splendidly. After Ducat went out, the wickets fell cheaply, and eight were down for 207. There was just a hope that the tourists would win, but the youthful McCanlis assisted the stocky Barling to play out time.
