NAVAL BOXING
CONTESTS AT DEVQNPORT H.M.S. PHILOMEL TRAINEES That one of the oldest traditions of the British Navy—that ot spoi’tsmanship—is being inculcated in the training of our young New Zealand sailors was shown last evening at a boxing tournament held in the Harbour Board shed, naval base, Devonport, before a large audience of Auckland citizens and the officers and* ships’ companies of H.M. ships Dunedin and Philomel. A special feature of the tourney was one of the finest boxing rings in the Dominion, a tribute to the Auckland sportsmen who presented it. The competitors were arranged in five groups accox-ding to weights. The following acted as officials: Referee., Lieut. Venville; judges, Lieut Keep and Capt. Bowring, R.M.; timekeeper, Lieut. Addis; announcer, Chief Petty Officer Airey, who is responsible for the boys’ training. The results of the bouts were as follows: Group I.—McLeod beat Goodger; Thomas beat Donaldson. Final. —Thomas beat McLeod. Group 2.—Mason beat Boyle; Payne beat Coulson. Final. —Mason beat Payne. Group 3.—Williams beat Moore; Sawyer beat Munday. Final. —Sawyer beat Williams. Group 4.— Kaze beat McNichol; Fulton beat Cameron. Final. —Fulton beat Kaye. Group s.—Hewson beat Hogan; Leighton beat Davies. Final. —Hewson beat Leighton. A four-round contest between Marine Baker and Marine Weaver, of H.M.S. Dunedin, which did not get beyond a rather pretty exhibition of boxing, resulted in a win for Weaver. Commander F. C. Bradley, of H.M.S. Philomel, before presenting the .prizes, added a few words on sport, thanked the competitors for their display, and in particular the Auckland sportsmen for their personal and practical interest in naval sport.
