AUDACITY OF AUDACIOUS
SURPRISES SPECULATORS WIN IN AUGUST HANDICAP Th 6 Great Audubon gelding Audacious, who created a surprise in the principal event at Addington to-day, only sported silk on three occasions last season, being out of a place in eaeh of his essays. The previous season O. E. Hooper’s pacer was not overraced, facing the starter five times for a win and two seconds. His prominent displays w’ere given at Auckland, where, in the spring of 1925, the son of Great Audubon ran second to Orion, in the Jellicoe Handup at the Otahuhu fixture on the opening day. On the final day Hooper drove tthe gelding to victory in the Fergusson Handicap, Talaro and Orion finishing two lengths away on even terms. Hooper returned to Auckland in the summer and made a bold bid to win the Auckland Cup of that yera. Great Audubon’s son ran a great race, but succumbed to Nelson Derby, who was in receipt of 12 yards. Audacious ran his two miles in 4,29 1-5, and was expected to soon improve on that go. He was then allowed tod take thin: / quietly, an started in the South Island later in two short-distance events unsuccessfully. Very little was known of his doings recently, and it was generally anticipated that Hooper’s charge would require a race or two to sharpen him up. That he has not lost his former dash was demonstrated to-day, when he beat a select field from a 4.30 mark in 4,29 2-5. ABYDOS.
