Charlie Purdy in Fierce Bout in Australia
Fairhall Beats Aucklander After 15-Round Clash AUCKLANDER HAS A PUNCH By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 9.5 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. At the Leichhardt Stadium last evening Tommy Fairhall, lost, defeated Charles Purdy, of Auckland, 9st 12ilb, on points in a 15-round boxing contest. The fight was very crude, as both men tried to secure a knock-out at the expense of scientific boxing. Purdy almost knocked out his opponent in the fourth round, when he delivered two hard lefts to the chin. The bell saved the Australian. After that Purdy was heavily punished about the body. There were many breaches of the rules, and both men were repeatedly warned by the referee. The contestants fought fiercely throughout. In the 15th round two hard rights from Fairhall opened a deep gash in one of Purdy’s temples, which bled freely. At the end of the fight both men were covered with blood. Fairhall established a good lead early in the contest, and continued to score the major points. He had a comfortable margin at the finish. Purdy’s chances of winning wore marred by his excessive clinching.— A. and N.Z.
