MAROUBRA SPEEDWAY

HUGE AMUSEMENT PARK RACING AND TROTTING BARRED The controversy over permitting | racing and trotting -on the Maroubra j Speedway, Sydney, has been advanced | a further stage by the point-blank ! refusal of the Metropolitan Land \ Board to accede to the lequest for an { alteration to the conditions of the • special lease. A clause in the lease ! prohibited horse and pony racing, but j light-harness enthusiasts were en- ■ deavouring to have the lease amended ! to allow trotting fixtures to be held. Latest exchanges from Sydney state j that the. Land Board, after fully con- ' sidering the application, definitely de- I dined to make any alteration. A recommendation to this effect will now be forwarded to the Government. TROTTING BARRED As a result of the decision the company will be unable to hold trotting races on its ground as was proposed. The board was of the opinion, the , chairman. Mr. D. J. Kenny, stated, that the Land Board, in recommend- j ing the granting of the special lease was, to a large extent, guided by the statement of the applicant. Albert John Hunting, that he proposed to float a company to provide for the expenditure of approximately £ 170,000 to fill in the swamp, lay out the ground with trees, lawns, luncheon and refreshment rooms, etc., and provide 36 tennis courts, polo, cricket, and football grounds, and swimming baths, together with a park and an artificial lake. ADVISEDLY INSERTED The special condition that “the land ! should not be used for horse and pony racing” was undoubtedly advisedly inserted in the lease. The evidence did not disclose any valid cause lor the deletion of the special condition, said the chairman. On the contrary, abundant evidence had been given that its deletion would cause residents of the locality great annoyance. Therefore the board recommended that the application be reI fused.
