AUCKLAND’S HEAVY CARTAGE BILL
COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE The cartage bill of the Auckland City Council for the past four years Has totalled £101,765 2s 10d. This aspect of the council’s activities will be considered and reported on by a special committee, which was set up last evening. On behalf of Cr. Phelan, Cr. Murray moved to set up the committee to hold an exhaustive inquiry into the method of employment of carters and the work done, the advisability of discontinuing the present system of contracting. and of the council doing its own cartage, the question of converting old buses into lorries, and of buying metal from private quarries.
