CITY COUNCIL SHOTS

The City Council, as at present constituted, had its longest sitting last evening, the business taking from 7 to 11.30 p.m. An amount of £6O is to be spent in fencing off a basket-ball ground on Mount Hobson Reserve, provided the City Council finds it has power to allow the game to be played on the reserve. * * * In future when a passenger boards a football special tramcar at Symonds Street to go to Eden Park the fare will be 4d, instead of the minimum of 6d charged in the past. * * * There are 22,305 persons entitled to vote at the coming poll on the £500,000 tramway loan. The supplementary roll has closed with 1,101 names, and 1,236 names have been deleted from the main roll. o * * It was decided to proceed with the raising of a loan of £30,000 for the extension of the abattoirs, and the purchase of land for holding paddocks, and the necessary fencing and buildings. The council declined to meet the Tamaki Town Board on a proposal to complete the St. Heliers-Kohimarama road. * * * A protest to Parliament urging the of Hauraki Gulf to powerdriven nets was again supported. * * * Part of a Sussex Street property was flooded in July when three pipes in a road culvert collapsed. As a result of

the flooding seven fowls were drowned. The council is to compensate the owner. * * * Permission was granted for another two-dial clock to be erected in Queen Street. This will be erected on John Court’s* building. , * * * Councillor Allum said the City West Ratepayers’ Association was right in saying College Hill, St. Mary’s and Shelly Beach Roads were in a bad state of repair. The roads in the locality were getting in a very poor condition, and the Works Committee should investigate. If they went much further, the repair bill would be very heavy. Too many pot-holes were appearing. Councillor S. 1. Crookes: The roads seem to be put in good order, and then lost sight of. The council should have an officer responsible for supervising these roads. * * * Councillor M. J. Bennett: Give the committee more money, and we can attend to these roads more closely. We are getting insufficient money to do the work. * * * Councillor M. J. Coyle: People buy land and build on these swampy areas and then expect the council to get them out of their difficulties at the expense of the other ratepayers. * * * Councillor S. 1. Crookes: Will the council have an opportunity of fully discussing the Water Commission’s report? It was decided to hold a special meeting to consider the report.
