OPOTIKI CHURCHES
CONGREGATIONS MEET The annual congregational meeting of St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Opotiki, was held on Thursday night. There was a good attendance. The Rev. D. Hird presided. Reports from various organisations and the financial report all indicated a healthy condition of affairs. The roll of membership showed a slight increase, the number of communicant members being 169. The general account showed that £SB9 had been raised during the year. A new infant school had been built at a cost of £350, and the whole of this money had been raised. The Women’s Missionary Union collected £57 for missionary work. Satisfactory reports were presented dealing with the Sunday schools, choir, Bible classes and literary society. A successful year’s work had been carried out by the home missioner, Mr. James Moore, and highly appreciative references were made to the work of the Rev. D. Hird and Mrs. Hird. * • * The annual meeting of parishioners of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church was also held on Thursday in the Parish Hall. The vicar, the Rev. J. E. Draper, presided over a good attendance. The vicar’s report spoke optimistically of the future standing of the church, both spiritually and financially, and made special reference to the work of the women’s guild, which through its efforts had enabled the parish hall to be renovated at a cost of £135. Reference was also made to the work of the Mothers’ Union, the choir, and organist, Mr. Parkinson. The election of officers resulted as follows: Vicar’s warden, Mr. A. Davey; people’s warden, Mr. E. Bunkall; hon. auditor, Mr. E. E. Chapman; vestry, Messrs. A. Braae, Pattle, Bloor, Cooke, Biddal and the vicar.
