EMPIRE MIGRATION

WORK OF SETTLEMENT By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright LONDON, Wednesday. The chairman of the Overseas Settlement Committee, Lord Lovat, says it has made useful progress in implementing the conclusions of the Imperial Conference. He must emphasise, however, the the number of would-be settlers assisted to go overseas was regulated by the Dominions, not by the committee “Good results are anticipated from the women’s household training centre at Market Harborough, in co-operation with the Australian Government,” says Lord Lovat. “We hope this centre will be open in a month. We are also making an effort to encourage the nomination system. “The committee attaches great importance to training schemes for maleland workers, but the Dominions so far have not felt that they can contribute toward the cost.” The chairman says the committee, under the Settlement Act, cannot spend one penny on such schemes unless an equal sum is contributed from other quarters.—A. and N.
