HEALTH OFFICER AND CITY ENGINEER
AN INQUIRY ASKED FOR “It seems to me that there is more to this than appears on the surface, and I would like to see It go to the Works Committee so that we can hear both what the city engineer and the health officer have to say,” .remarked Cr. J. A. C. Allum to the City Council last evening. “I regret that the engineer has made such a statement.” Cr. Allum was referring to a report from the city engineer concerning drainage in Kimberley Road. The health officer commented on sewers being called upon to take storm water in addition to sewage, and recommended that storm water intakes should be disconnected. In the course of reporting on the position the city engineer remarked that it would be much more helpful to the council if the medical officer of health, instead of constantly criticising the council, were to endeavour to co-operate with it in overcoming the difficulties it had to contend with. Cr. Allum said that it was essential that the council should get on side with the Health Department, and any difficulties that existed could be best investigated by the committee. The matter was referred to the Works Committee.
