RECORD MAKO
CAUGHT BY F. B. LEWIS WINS VALUABLE TROPHY (From Our Ovjn Correspondent.) RUSSELL, Thursday. Mr. F. B. Lewis, of Norfolk, England, who visited Russell during the last fishing season, wins the handsome trophy valued at £SO, donated to the successful deep-sea angler, who was a guest at the Zane Grey Sporting Club, Russell. Mr. Lewis was fishing from the launch Marlin when he sighted a huge fish,’ midway between the famous Island of Urupukapuka and Bird Rock, in the waters in and around Cape Brett.. The mako shark immediately took the bait. The great monster of the deep put up a strenuous fight and kept on or near the surface all the time and jumped well clear of the sea on two occasions. Mr. Lewis used the new design of reel made by Mr. Mitchell Henry, of London. The reel carries 600 yards of 36 thread. The brake is controlled by a small lever convenient to the first finger of the left hand up the rod, and gives splendid control of the fish. The reel and line are fixed above the rod. The weight of the world’s record mako shark was 5911 b, its length being 10ft 2in, and its girth 4ft Sin. The time it took the angler to land his catch was one hour and five minutes.
