Miss Horton Wins at Titirangi

BRILLIANT GOLF | NEW LADY CHAMPION Titirangi Ladies’ Golf Club has a new champion in Miss K. Horton, who played herself into the position yesterday afternoon with almost faultless golf over 12 holes. Her match with Mrs. Dufaur, the defender of the title and the other finalist, ended 7 up and 6 to play. "PROM the start Miss Horton never ■ A looked like being beaten, and she quickly established a lead that was beyond the usual good finish of Mrs. Dufaur to make any impression upon. It happens that Miss Horton has for quite a long time been off lny approach shots, and at the first hole of the match she half topped her mashie shot, which did not promise well, but after that her short game was such that she might have been born with a nvashie in her hand. Moreover her long game was delightful. She was hitting her wooden tee and second shots with a vim that secured a distance far better than might have been expected of one of her slight build. In ordinary circumstances Mrs. Dufaur would have made a fight of it, and her usual rally over the last half might have had its effect on. the game, particularly as previously she has always beaten Miss Horton. However, this was not one of the ordinary circumstances. Airs. Dufaur was cutting all her long shots, and against the sort of golf that Miss Horton played this was fatal. The pair halved the first hole in four, but the next three went to Miss Horton in 443, each per medium of brilliant approaching that left only the necessity for one putt. Against a very strong head wind with a suggestion of rain, this was particularly fine scoring. The fifth saw Mrs. Dufaur slice her second out of bounds, and Miss Horton took the hole with a 6, taking four good shots to get on against the wind. The famous Whau saw Miss Horton on the green with her tee shot, and Airs. Dufaur was short and rolled back. Following the usual custom she played a provisional ball—which also rolled into the creek banks, in an unplayable position. The umpire, Mr. S. Alorpeth, held that the second ball must be played, and though the first ball was in playable position, M.rs. Dufaur had to relinquish her chances, becoming 5 down. The next two were halved in good fives, and Miss Horton became six up at the turn with a fine 4 to 5. Aliss Horton had done the nine in the excellent score of 38, which, under the conditions very few people could have bettered. The 10th was won by Aliss Horton, and the two following holes being halved, she won 7 and 0. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP After a sterling battle, with fairly high scoring, Aliss C. Bray, who qualified at the head of the junior list, won the final from Miss Grierson, 1 up. Aliss Grierson started out with a quickly established lead of 3 up, but the match was square at the 10th. In the next few holes Aliss Grierson again established a lead, and was eventually 2 up and 4 to play. Aliss Bray annexed the next thi’ee, however, and when Aliss Grierson missed a two-foot putt for a win on the 18th Miss Bray putted boldly for a half, which gave her the match. FOUR-BALL WON SIX UP Combining excellently Aliss M. Goldwater and Aliss R. Cornaga won the four-ball competition with a card showing G up. Aliss Goldwater played sufficiently well to win the play off in the bogey competition in which she and two others tied the previous afternoon. In the four-ball competition other good cards returned Aliss Coiebrook and Aliss Napier o up. Mrs. Reid and Al.rs. O’Leary 5 up, and Miss J. Easton and Aliss C. Stubbs 5 up - Miss AlcGlashan won the putting competition.
