YOUTHS GIVEN PROBATION TWOyoung men who stole copper cable valued at £7 14s from the Auckland Electric-Power Board were placed on probation for two years by Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., to-day. The accused, who admitted their guilt, were Alder Francis Walding, aged 20, and John Ellis, aged 20. Chief-Detective Cummings said that the men went into the Power Board’s yard in the early evening and stole 1541 b of cable. They burnt off the insulation and sold the cable to a dealer. “These cases are common and difficult to detect,” said Mr. Cummings. Mr. Fleming. who appeared for Walding. said that it was unfortunate that he had been previously convicted of stealing lead and assault. The previous theft, however, had been a technical one. The Rev. Jasper Calder, in speaking on behalf of Ellis, said that he had been before the court once on a charge of using bad language. The magistrate, in admitting accused to probation, said that although the offence was a common one. he was reluctant to send young men to gaol.
