COMPETITIONS CONCLUDED
STATISTICAL REVIEW CONCERNING TRAINERS, HORSEMEN AND SIRES The 1926-27 light-harness season having concluded, the premiership in the various sections, horsemen, trainers and sires, have been decided, the respective winners being: D. Withers, M. B. Edwards and Logan Pointer. The contests each season create a fine spirit of friendly rivalry and are followed with intense interest by trotting enthusiasts throughout New Zealand, and even in Australian States and Tasmania, where the sport is making good progress. LEADING HORSEMEN The competition for a trophy for the most successful rider and driver was initiated in the season of 1914-15, the winner being A. Pringle. Since that period such well-known horsemen as J. Bryce, E. C. McDermott, J. McLennan, B. Jarden, W. J. Tomkinson and D. Withers have been successful, Bryce having the distinction of heading the list on five occasions. The following is the complete table of winning horsemen: McDERMOTT’S BIG SCORE
LEADING TRAINERS The season 1915-16 saw the trainers’ contest instituted, J. (“Scotty”) Bryce being returned the first winner. For seven years, despite herculean efforts, no other mentor was able to displace the consistent, successful James, but eventually in 1922-23 F. Holmes got to the front. Bryce was on deck again the following season, and since then W. J. Tomkinson, D. Withers and M. B. Edwards have attained the honour. Bryce’s record of eight times premier trainer in twelve seasons is one that he must feel justifiably proud ot, and it will take some equalling. Appended is the list of winners. A SPLENDID RECORD
LEADING SIRES The riband for the sire which succeeded in producing the greatest number of winners during the season was first presented in 1915-16, the honour falling to that wonderful old horse Rothschild. Then followed the importation of Mr. E. X. Lelievre, Harold Dillon, whose progeny for five successive seasons kept the son of Sydney Dillon at the top of the tree. The 1921-22 contest resulted in a deadheat between Wildwood Junr., the New Zealand Cup winner of 1909 and 1910, and the American-bred Logan Pointer. The latter won right out the following year, and has not been headed since. The achievements of descendants of the Star Pointer horse show very clearly what a loss to the Dominion is the early passing of such a great sire, whose death occurred about three years ago. A summary of the leading sires is as under: WINNERS OF CHAMPIONSHIP Wins 1015- —Rothschild 41 i" 1016- —Harold Dillon 50 1017- —Harold Dillon 28 1018- —Harold Dillon 56 1019- —Harold Dillon 401 1920- —Harold Dillon 40 1921- —Wildwood Junr 39 *1921-22—Logan Pointer 39 1922- —Logan Pointer 58J 1923- —Logan Pointer 75 1924- —Logan . This should have read 4.28, which will place Terence, in the event of a win in the August Handicap, on the end of the big November event. TROTTING FIXTURES August 6, 10, 12—N.Z.
