A REAL SPEED TEST

T EW ZEALAND can boast of some speed artists in its light harness world over a mile, Acron with a 2.3 3-5 clip against him, holding the record. During the past season some good eight furlong essays have been recorded, notably by Great Bingen, who traversed ten furlongs equivalent to a 2.8 1-4 gait, Native Chief (2.8 2-5), Nelson Derby (2.9) and Nelson Fame (2.9 1-5). A meeting of these speed kings over a mile journey would be well worth going a long way to see, and with a special preparation any of the candidates would be equal to putting up, under favourable conditions, a fresh record. Perhaps if it came to a real test Nelson Fame would smash the watch.
