A FRIEND TO HORSES To a woman. Miss Louie Harvie, of Melbourne, is due the existence of the Purple Cross Society, founded* about 13 years ago, which aims at the protection and better treatment of horses. In Melbourne and suburbs it has erected 30 watertroughs for their use, including a memorial in St. Kilda Road in honour of the part horses took in the great war. ARCHITECTURE Last year Crete Lihotzky, a promising young Viennese architect, designed one of the new houses which were being erected by the municipality of Vienna, her plans meeting with much success. She is now working for the municipality of Frankfurt. AN INTREPID CYCLIST A woman, Miss Foley, beat all-comers in a recent coast-to-coast motor-cycle reliability trial in England. Miss Foley won the Alan Douglas- trophy for the best performance of any machine in the 300-mile trial and the Harvey Kelly trophy for the best solo performance. This is said to be one of the greatest feats yet achieved by a woman competing on equaL terms with men. She did not lose a single mark in the 300mile trial, which provides an eloquent testimony of her skill as a rider. A NEW ZEALANDER A notable figure among New Zealand women is Mrs. Elizabeth McCombs, who for six years has been a vigorous member of the Christchurch City Council. She takes the keenest interest in all movements for the betterment of women and children, and her position as member of the Christchurch Hospital and Charitable Aid Board enhances her power for good in this respect. Her husband, Mr. J. McCombs, is M.P. for Lyttelton. A UNIQUE GALLERY In the new cathedral in Liverpool. England, is a remarkable “Gallery of Good Women.” All the 21 windows are dedicated to various women who have been notable each in her own particular sphere. A few of the dedications are: Elizabeth Fry, and all pitiful women; Ca.therine Gladstone, and all loyalhearted wives; Susanna Westley, and all devoted mothers; Grace Darling, and all courageous maidens: Dr. Alice Marval, and all who have laid down their lives for their sisters; and Christina Rossetti, and all sweet singers.
