PRINCESS AND TIVOLI
“BUTTERFLIES IN THE RAIN” Will the new era in social customs be one of the unlicensed freedom or will it be a reaction to Puritanical standards ? In “Butterflies in the Rain,” which opens at the Princess and Tivoli Theatres to-night, Edward Sloman, director,
has depicted a modern situation which might lead to either result. Laura La Plante and James Kirkwood co-star. “I think our socalled freedom will go a little further,” said Kirkwood, “and then we will have a strong reaction. In the history of mankind we have had always .action and re-action in social ethics.
“We have always been thus. The changes run in periods of from 50 to 100 years. Our most recent change since the war has been more vigorous than any other in history, and I predict it will not last as long as most of them. Twenty years ought to be the limit. Ten years from now we will wonder how we ever countenanced such things. The new generation will have hold of things.” In “Butterfles in the Rain,” a modernist picture directed by Edward Sloman, the members of the supporting cast include Dorothy Cummings, Robert Ober, Dorothy Stokes, Edwards Davis, Clarence Thompson and Ruby Lafayette. On the same programme the Paramount feature, “The Lady of the Harem,” will be screened. The story of “The Lady of the Harem,” adapted for the screen by James T. O’Donohoe, is from the stage production. “Hassan,” by James Elroy Flecker. The entire picture has been filmed on a scale of unprecedented gorgeousness. Featured players in the film are Ernest Torrence, William Collier jun„ Greta Nissen and Louise Fazenda.
