SPORTING COMPANY OF H.M.S. DUNEDIN
GAMES ON WAY OUT SHIP’S RETURN AFTER REFIT Water polo is the star accomplishment of the officers and crew of H.M.S. Dunedin, flagship of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, which returned to Auckland yesterday after refitting at Chatham. The ship’s company, however, plays Rugby, Soccer, hockey, and cricket on the slightest provocation. AT Bermuda, on the way out, the Dunedin met the five vessels of the North American-West Indies Squadron, and sport was the main attraction for three days. Water polo and cricket were played against the other ships, and in aquatic sports the Bunedin “scooped the pool.” At Jamaica, the Association footballers played drawn games with the Green Howards, the British regiment garrisoned there, and the cricketers and hockey players were beaten but not trounced. Balboa also gave the sportsmen time to stretch their legs, and Panama teams went down in Soccer and water polo. The “Vrais Amies” challenged the ship at Papeete, and several football games were played. The French Governor of Papeete gave a ball for the officers of the Bunedin and the Veronica, which arrived on the same day, and over 100 guests were entertained aboard the Bunedin on the day before sailing.
