SOLACE
(Written for THE SUN.) Deep in the heart of the virgin bush There is wealth of the gods untold, With never a sign of relentless rust That cankers the rich man’s gold; Never a sigh from the fretted breast And never a burning tear, To fall on the trail of vain desire When the end of the trail is near. The tui sings in the hinau tree To herald a new desire, And the note of the bell-bird echoes on Like the throb of a golden lyre; The azure tint in the deep still pool Where the vines of the rata cling, Is pierced in its limpid depths anon From the flash of the wild bird’s wing. Fill ye full life’s glistening bowl, Ere the waters of life run low; Let never a drip from its crystal lip Run down where the rank things grow; The hill-crest severs the things that From the joj's of the nether side. Then come to the place of lasting joy Where the bush and the birds abide. —F.E. SIX CHINESE PROVERBS Those who cannot sometimes be deaf are unfit to rule. The error of a moment becomes the sorrow of a lifetime. * * & By nature all men are alike, but by education widely different. Riches come better after poverty than poverty after riches. * * * The gods cannot help a man who loses opportunities. * * * One lash to a good horse; one word to a wise man. Never lose an opportunity to see anything beautiful. Welcome it in every fair face, every fair sky, every fair flower, and be sure that yet gayer meadows, and yet bluer skies await you in the days to come. All who have meant good work with their whole hearts, have done good work although they may die before they have time to sign it. —K.L.S.
