THRILLS AT RICCARTON

YESTERDAY’S TRY-OUTS PROVIDE MANY INTERESTING BOUTS (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Training operations were conducted this morning under the best of conditions. The course was in fine order, and on the flat, on the outside of the course proper, some good times were registered. On the same track the big fences were available, and they provided some interesting schooling. Royal Form went particularly well in a bout over hurdles, and Solferite put up a very last six furlongs. Over the big fences Zircon gave an erratic display, and coming so soon after his running off last week, has put him out of favour, and E. Warner in the hospital. Kawini and Tuki did well, but Crown Coin crashed heavily. SEVEN GO TOGETHER The. most interesting item of the morning was when Kawini, Zircon, Tuki, Crown Coin, Ivapuna, Scamp, and Greenstone set out for a round of the steeplechase fences on the course proper. Kapuna and Scamp were the early leaders, with Tuki and Kawini handy, while Greenstone tailed off. Zircon went to the front round the top turn, but ran off at the fence at the top of the straight, carrying Kawini oil’, while. Crown Coin and Greenstone fell at this fence. Zircon was in front passing the winning post, but going on to Cutis’ fence he ran off in determined fashion, and he charged into the fence near the trainers’ room. His rider, E. Warner, had a heavy fall, and was taken to hospital, where he was treated for inI juries to his head. SPOILED BY ZIRCON The schooling effort was very interesting, but Zircon’s waywardness rather spoiled it. Kawini and Tuki shaped best of the Grand National

horses, their jumping throughout being j excellent. It was no fault of Kawini’s . that he ran off. Kapuna gave a brilliant exhibition for a novice, and he will not lack support if he is started in the Beaufort or the Lincoln Steeplechase. Zircon does not seem to relish the big fences. Crown Coin fell heavily, and his prospects do not now look bright. Following on a disappointing race in the Homeby Steeplechase, Pamplona has gone home. T. F. Quinlivan left for Hawke’s Bay with Hatlior, who developed serious lameness after the Brabazon Handicap. HURDLERS PLEASE Perle de Leon, Gaze, and Royal Form set out for a school over six hurdles, and after jumping two Tholomon joined in behind them. Gaze was soon out in front, and he set a solid pace, giving a very fine exhibition of jumping. After clearing the fifth obstacle Royal Form made a forward move, and he was alongside Gaze at the last hurdle. The pace was solid all the way, the last round being done in 1.45. Perle de Leon was not far behind , the other pair at the finish. It was a very attractive display all round, but Perle de Leon did nut please as much as the other pair, who made many friends. Tholomon shaped quite satisfactorily by comparison. Coastguard and Rangatalii were companions in a school over six hurdles. The pace was on all the way, and Coastguard led his mate throughout. Bandolero went out to jump the steeplechase country, but after scrambling over the sod wall he refused at the post and rails. The attempt to school him on the course by himself was then abandoned. Later and Bandolero were sent over a round in the morning Goodform, Ploughboy, of the schooling fences. Goodform and Bandolero jumped well throughout, but Ploughboy fell. , AGAINST THE WATCH Royal Head sprinted half a mile in 50 4-ssec, and his siablemate, Arpent, ran down a little later in 50 2-ssec. These two horses look very well. Scoff took «52sec over half a mile, and probably could have done a trifle better. Magna Charta and Satrap were associated over six furlongs, which they covered in 1.18 4-5, with not much between them at the finish. Magna Charta looks in great order after his race on Saturday. Tarleton was gums well alongside lluikai after doing live furlongs in 1.4 4-5. Hoyiake and Lady Swinton rattled down from the half-mile post in 50 3-ssec. There was not much, between Thorndale and Mali Jong at the end of five furlongs, run in 1.6. Charlatan and a mate were on terms at the end of a mile, which they covered in 1.54 3-5. Gold Mint was in front of Rina Maunga in a five-furlong spin, run in 1.6 4-5. Nincompoop and Beaming sprinted half a mile in 50 4-ssec, with Nincompoop claiming a slight advantage at the finish. FASTEST GALLOP Solferite was going better than Taboo at the end of six furlongs, covered in the fast time of 1.16 4-5. Aberfeldy and Gay Queen were associated over a mile, which they ran in 1.47 3-5. Gay Queen claimed a slight advantage at the finish. Peter Maxwell covered a mile by himself in 1.53, and was finishing on well. Master Clarence and Assurance were going strongly at the end of six furlongs, which they ran in 1.18 3-5. Armchair and Rascal were associated over an easy half-mile, which occupied 54 3-ssec. Beau Cavalier covered a mile in 1.54, going at an even pace all through, and finishing strongly. This was his first bit of fast work since his arrival. Wreath of Myrtle had Uproar as a mate in a useful half-mile sprint, j Chickwheat and Soltoe were comi panions over seven furlongs, which they ran in 1.32 2-5. Both horses | went well. Cliickv. heat’s Winter Cup I chance cannot be ignored. Miss Minerva dashed over five furlongs in [1.3 j-s—a smart ell or L
