NEW IDEAS IN BUSINESS WANTED

MR. ROBT. LAIDLAW’S VIEWS “Tie your business to the chariot wheels of a new idea,” was the advice given to members of the Advertising Club yesterday by Mr. Robert Laidlaw. In his address, which was entitled. ‘Wanted —A New Bag of Tricks,” Mr. Laidlaw declared that a business which had ceased to grow and to progress was decaying. The policy of “leave well alone” which was tempting in times of prosperity was a dangerous one. The palate of the public had to be tickled constantly with new ideas. Pear’s soap succeeded with its sledgehammer style of advertising on everj bus and platform. When the marker was flooded with 50 varieties of soap, it was the new ideas of Palmolive which brought it ahead. “A new idea every day” was the slogan of one big American concern. Henry Ford had decided that he could do without advertising and last year his sales had been capped by the Chevrolet Company. The public's idea about cars had changed and Ford had lost popularity. Still he was a big enough man to "come back.”
