A FATAL SMOKE

WHARE CATCHES FIRE OLD MAN BURNED TO DEATH Sydney Edwin Lodge, aged 74, had been a nightwatchman for 20 years, but he hoped to travel the world before he died. Lodge was burnt to death'when his whare at A. and T. Burt’s. Nelson Street, caught fire in the early hours of July 24. At the inquest held to-day by the coroner, Mr. F. Tv. Hunt, S.M.. evidence was given that a charred pipe was found beside Lodge’s burnt body. Superintendent J. L. Wilson, of the City Fire Brigade, was of opinion that Lodge had been smoking in bed, and fell asleep. The coroner’s verdict was that Lodge was burnt in an accidental fire.
