SAILORS’ HOME
Sir. — When one-remembers how thankful we must all be for the able and selfsacrificing action of the seamen of the Navy and Mercantile Marine, it is very distressing' to see the present state of the Sailors’ Home and appurtanences. The building at the present time is badly in need of repairs, and surely it behoves those whose property and lives were protected by the seamen during the war to subscribe handsomely to the necessary fund, for which I understand an appeal has been launched to enable this deserving institution to be made a pleasant sight and a credit to the port of Auckland. After going through the building I cannot but wonder how your readers would appreciate having to be one of these seamen who, when in port, look upon this place as a home away from home. If they could only compare their home comforts and luxuries with those that are now provided for the seamen they would, I imagine, be the first to help in this deserving cause. This institution is in debt, though every endeavour has been made to make it support itself, but the necessary repairs to the building can only be done by the ready support to the appeal for funds now being made. HELP.
