Horse Arrived Too Late and is Withdrawn
Well Backed Favourite By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright SYDNEY, August 1. An unusual incident occurred today at the Canterbury Park holiday race meeting. The name of the favourite in the first race was hoisted on the starting board, and after the horse had been heavily backed it was discovered he had not reached the course. The name was then removed from the starters* listThe bookmakers interviewed the stewards and asked to be allowed to declare the early betting off and make a fresh start. This request was not granted. The horse arrived before the race was due to start, but the stewards withdrew him, as he had not reached the course in the time before the race necessary under the rules. The trainer, explained that he had arranged for the horse to be there in time, but the transport broke down. Tlie stewards adjudged the trainer guilty of carelessness »j,nd lined him £2O.
