“EARLY BIRD”
Not a Nukumai—Yet Master Noel (C. Scott) was jumped over four pony hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday morning and got through his task without mishap. He will have to improve, however, if he is to earn his keep as a hurdler. Exalted For Hunt Meeting Another of last season’s youngsters entered for the Dunedin Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting is Exalted, a filly by Leighton from Flora McDonald, who showed some pace in her engagements, although she failed to get on the winning list. Progeny of Monotress J. Anderton has two additions to his stable in a live-year-old gelding by Royal Soult from Babe, and a four-year-old gelding by the same sire from Monotress. Monotress was got by Monoform from Victorine, by Firearm from Victoria, by Feve from Memento, and was bred by Mr. C. Dawson in 3 909. The four-year-old under notice was bred by Mr. W. H. Paterson. More About Reed After a month’s holiday in Melbourne, the New Zealand jockey, Roy Reed, has returned to the metropolis and has started riding work again at Randwick. He intends to stay in Sydney for a few’ weeks. Finished With Racing? Starmist met with an injury to a shoulder while galloping recently and G. Murray Aynsley has found it necessary to spell her. Unless the trouble disappears quickly it is probable that the Autumnus mare will be retired to the stud. Acre Jumper Another promising Taranaki hurdler in Lady Acre claims an engagement in the Hunters’ Hurdles at the Pakuranga gathering. She is one of the Acre tribe, and reports of her schooling credit her with being a fine jumper. The field engaged in the Hunters’ Hurdles should be a good test for any maiden jumper. Anchor has shown us that Acre’s progeny can jump. Popular With Public Extract from the report made by the president of the Egmont Racing Club: Following upon a recommendation from last annual meeting, your committee arranged for an increased number of 10s totalisator windows on the lawn at the February meeting and this was again increased in May. It is difficult to estimate the financial advantage or otherwise of this innovation, but the fact remains that it was exceedingly popular with the public and has certainly justified its retention. Useful Team P. Keith, who has charge of the Epsom fancy, Aorangi, always has a useful horse in his team and through the agency of Royal Sun and Woodville he has had a profitable season, says a Sydney writer. Royal Sun, whom he races himself, has won four races, including two at Randwick, and £2,445 in prize money, while the tw r o wins of Woodville and the place* money earned by Cawnpore have increased the trainer’s total to £2,990. With Aorangi, Royal Sun, Woodville and Cawnpore in his team. Keith’s prospects for more successes in the next few months look bright. After the Race
There was considerable .confusion after the running of the . Grafton (N.S.W.) Maiden Handicap, in which Quantive beat Mick Poison’s gelding, Student Prince, by half a length. A protest was entered for boring and the race was awarded to Student Prince, but before the connections of Quantive lodged an appeal to the . A.J.C. the weight flag was hoisted, and bookmakers began to pay out on Student Prince, and the tote also paid out. Quantive ran five furlongs in a little over 61sec., and as she will lose her maiden certificate if her connections’ appeal succeeds, it is hardly likely they will proceed with it. Quantive should prove a decent performer. Disappointing Sprinter Serang, who has been most disappointing for the season just concluded, may yet prove that his pace lias nut altogether deserted him, for he is working well on the tracks, and looks as well as ever he did. He is being prepared lor spring racing, and may be taken South for the Marton and Wanganui meetings, so as to sharpen him up for the following Avondale fixture. Paganelli’s Next Outing Paganelli was a smart two-year-old, and therefore his first appearance as a three-year-old will be awaited with interest. The Lord Quex —Ringdove gelding has been nominated for the open sprint at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting on August 20, and if he goes to the post increased interest will be added to the event. It will be remembered that Paganelli ran Gascony to a neck in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes, and at the end he was running on strongly, giving the impresson that he would stay. Paganelli claims an engagement in the Avondale Guineas. Odin After the Bracelet During the week Odin was subjected to barrier practice at Ellerslie. and he behaved well. He has been galloping freely on the tracks, and is very much improved. Odin will be ridden in the Ladies’ Bracelet—for gentleman riders —-at the Pakuranga meeting by Mr. ,T. Wheeler, who has been getting his hand in by riding a lot of work at Ellerslie.
Another Beau Cavalier? The hunter Four Feathers, who is engaged in the Greenmount Steeples at the Pakuranga meeting, made his- appearance at Ellerslie yesterdaj’ morning, when he was allowed to canter over a couple of circuits at half pace. Four Feathers is owned by Mr. Quartley, best known as the owner of Beau Cavalier, and will be trained by S. Tooman when that mentor comes back from the National meeting. At present the hunter is in charge of George Laing. Totalisator in Victoria
At the annual meeting yesterday of the Victoria Racing Club the chairman indicated that the club would support the introduction of the totalisator in Victoria if the bookmakers -were allowed to operate as in Sydney. The chairman also stated that the committee sympathised with trainers who had difficulty in securing boys who could ride at the present minimum weight of 7st., but it would not favour a proposal to increase that minimum as it would operate against the best horses. Engaged In Hunt Cup Birkenose made a reputation for himself as a hunter last season, and among his performances was a third in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup. He is engaged again this month, and from all accounts he will strip a fit horse. At the Manawatu Hunt’s point-to-point last week Birkenose finished second to Maidos in the open steeplechase, and also in the field were Tarero, third, Roman, Mahuru, who won the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase three years ago, Panim and others. Birkenose was always going well in this event, and at the end he was beaten for pace. Maidos, the winner, is a tearaway sort of customer who competed in hack steeplechase events at Trentham last month. On appearances. Birkenose may do better at Ellerslie on this occasion, despite the presence of Lupineel.
Useful Hunter The winner of the Hunters’ Hurdles at the Great Northern meeting, Just John, will be seen in action in a similar class of event at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. The Taranaki gelding created a very favourable impression when raced here a couple of months ago, and it is certain that he will be taken care of this month. Staying appears to be Just John’s forte. In Open Company Golden Krist is working well at Ellerslie, and on Saturday morning he was sent once round on the sand at a good pace with a view to his engagement in the Jellicoe Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. When he won a mile hack event at Ellerslie a couple of months ago Golden Krist came at the right end, and won with something in reserve. Since the Great Northern meeting Golden Krist has been kept busy, and he should strip a fit horse this month. Smart Galloper When brought to Ellerslie to fulfil his engagements at the Great Northern fixture, Llandudno was in rare fettle, scoring a first and a second, being one of the fittest horses at the meeting. Llandudno has been entered for the Jellicoe Handicap this month, and if he has retained his form he would be unbeatable. In the Cornwall Handicap he ran Lomint to a head, the pair being well clear of the field, and in the Carbine Plate all his rider had to do was to sit still and hank on, with the result that the horse gave nothing else a chance. Llandudno is sure to be early favourite for the Jellicoe Handicap. The Formative gelding races in the popular colours of Mrs. M. R. Campbell, of Hawke’s Bay, and is trained, together with Mr. IT. M. Campbell’s Ballachulish, by W. Stone, at Te Awamutu. Kentucky Oaks Although the value of the Kentucky Oaks did not approach that of the Kentucky Derby, it was worth winning, first money being £2,180, second £3OO, third £IOO and fourth £44. The winner was Gallagher and Combs’s Mary Jane (Pennant —Bourbon Lass), who, with 8.10, ran the nine furlongs in 1.53 2-5 on a slow track. Sprinter In Form Haerera is being kept going, and is to be given a run in the Dunedin Handicap, six furlongs, at the Pakuranga Hunt fixture. It will be remembered that the Heather Mixture gelding ran prominently in the open seven furlong race at the Great Northern meeting, and did not meet with the best of luck in the running. Of late he has been schooled over the sticks, but \vith his pace he should win a race or two on the flat before he takes to hurdling. The race at Ellerslie this month should bring him along nicely for the more important engagements ahead. Well Schooled Eaton Town has been schooling well over the pony hurdles at Ellerslie, and he may be given a run in the Greenmount Steeples at the Pakuranga fixture. He has apparently done a fair bit of schooling, and therefore his work in the future will be watched with interest. Lupineel For Ellerslie On his last appearance at Ellerslie, Lupineel finished second in the Hunt Cup, and later on was unlucky in the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase. The Manchin eel gelding figures among the nominations for the Pakuranga Hunt Cup. and he will be one of the most fancied on the day. On performances he is easily the pick of the field, although there are one or two promising sorts in the 15 entered. Pakuranga Hunt Meets The programme drawn up for this month is as follows:—To-day, Rainarama; Saturday, August 6, Creamery, East Tamaki; Tuesday, August 9, Pakuranga Hill; Saturday, August 13, Flat Bush School, East Tamaki; Tuesday, August 16, Clevedon; Saturday, August 20, Hunt Club races at Ellerslie; Tuesday, August 23, Howick School; Saturday, August 27, East Tamaki Hall; Tuesday, August 30, •Greenmount, East Tamaki.
