Empire Never Had More Life
Mr. Baldwin at Montreal Rousing Speech in Shirt-Sleeves MONTREAL was ablaze with illuminations for the arrival of the Royal party and Mr Stanley Baldwin, Prime Minister of Britain, from Quebec, on their tour of Canada to take part in the Dominion’s jubilee celebrations. Next day, in broiling heat, Mr. Baldwin took off his coat and, cool in his shirt sleeves, aroused a great audience of Canadians to a glow of patriotism and loyal affection for the Empire. Reed. 9-5 a.m. MONTREAL, Monday. rjtHE British Prime Minister addressed a gathering o£ 1,000 at the Canadian Club. He declared that the British Government was devoting £1,000,000 to the Empire Marketing Board, to advance an ideal and to create a consciousnss of Empire. He urged Canadians to buy British goods, and said he hoped the remainder of the Empire would buy in increasing quantity the products of Canada. He said: —“If anyone says that Britain is decadent in any way, he is making the biggest mistake in the world. There was never a time when the Empire had more life than now, and its heart was never better.” Mr. Baldwin appealed to young men to enter public life, warning them that the rewards and trials were great. He added: —“If any man does not believe it, let him take half my job.” Concluding, he said:—"Don’t be in too much of a hurry to become wealthy.”
