MAXIM BRODI
BRILLIANT RUSSIAN TENOR There was a big surprise for the large audience at the New Regent last night, when the management announced the appearance of M. Maxim Brodi, the brilliant Russian tenor. Mr. Brodi was sailing to America by the R.M.S. Niagara, when the Regent management, with their usual enterprise, persuaded him to break his journey in order to appear before Regent audiences for ten days. Delayed by fog, it was 2 o’clock before the American liner was cleared at the wharf. Then followed rushing and scurrying. Grabbing his luggage from the holds, and collecting his bags, M. Brodi was rushed to the Regent Theatre in Queen Street. Immediate preparations were made for his • ap-
pearance last night and unadvertised and without any orchestral rehearsal, M. Brodi appeared before a large and expectant house. His success was instantaneous. Opening with one verse of “The Prisoner’s Song,” M. Brodi sane: “Lolita” with great force, and yet restrained. The applause was terrific. His second number was “Because I Love You.” In response to incessant applause two encores were given, “O Sole Mio” particularly “pulling the house down.” The delighted audience refused to let the brilliant tenor depart and M. Brodi was compelled to say a few words. Maxim Brodi will appear afternoons and evenings for ten days only. On Friday a complete new programme will be rendered by him. including the popular “Song of the Volga Boatmen." This exclusive and extraordinary engagement was only secured at enormous expense, in the endeavour of the Regent management “to provide Auckland with the very best available in entertainment.
