RUN CARS ON £6 A WEEK

SYDNEY COUNCIL’S INQUIRY "How to own and run a motor-car on £6 a week. "Apply City Council.” That 250 of the city council’s 6,000 employees own and run motor-cars was disclosed at the latest meeting of the Civic Garage Investigation Committee. The Lord Mayor was the authority for the statement. "Well, I am not one of the 250,” remarked the town clerk, Mr. Layton, amid laughter. "No doubt about it—the town hall is a jolly good place to be employed in,” commented Alderman Walder. He said he understood that seven council garage employees, earning ordinary wages—£s or £6 a week —were able to own and run cars. It was pointed out at the town hall that garage einplojees, being in "the line,” knew where to buy second-hand cars. They could purchase an apparent "crock” cheaply, repair it, and turn it out a different vehicle. Their knowledge enabled them to avoid much of the expense that fell upon an amateur. Other city council employees owning ears would have the benefit of the advice of their garage friends. Over the North and South Islands there are now over 200 official hotels for members of the South and North Island Motor Unions.
