FINE BATTING

DEMPSTER UNBEATEN AT 167 BIG FIRST INNINGS LEAD GOOD BOWLING BY BERNAU By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. DEMPSTER’S brilliant innings of 167 not out, and Bernau’s fine bowling when Glamorgan went to the wickets, gave New Zealand a first innings lead of two hundred; hut the New Zealand skipper, Lowry, did not force a follow-on by Glamorgan. New Zealand declared its second innings closed with six wickets down for 144

Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Monday. A bank holiday crowd of 8,000 at Cardiff saw fluctuating cricket. Lowry helped Dempster to add 79 for the fifth wicket in an hour; then five wickets fell for 23.

Mercer was almost unplayable, taking five wickets for 23. Dempster gave one chance in the slips, when he was 135. He gave a magnificent display, batting

for four and a-half hours, and hitting one six and 14 fours.

Bates and D. Davies, opening for Glamorgan, hit freely. The first wicket fell at 73. Bernau relieved Merritt of the bowling, and this resulted in such a change in the game that Glamorgan was out inside two and a-ha!f hours. No batsman turned Bernau’s fast deliveries. In the final spell he took three wickets in four overs for 11 runs. Despite New Zealand’s lead of 200, Lowry did not enforce a follow-on. New Zealand lost three wickets for 64, though Dacre hit with fine power. Details: NEW ZEALAND First Innings C. C. Dacre, c Sullivan, b Arnott . . 0 C. S. Dempster, not out 167 R. C.
