Shallow Bay tor Reclamation
SUGGESTED SCHEME HOBSON BAY ALTERN AT)Ve THE proposal to recli.m u Bay, and convert it mto an industrial ‘ «*>•"> considered objectionable k . > son Bay resident,.", a totally different liaht^' 0 1 people of another Auckland urban district. Kl * nd ~b . The Te Atatu Ratepayers' Ass,., tion considers that, if anv L> be spent in reclamation has no objection to that ~ spent in its area, and J l *te: Shallow Bay would provide ß6 ?*,** reclamation proposition than Row The association is scheme from this aspect, * poses to seek assistance fron- lh. ous local bodies and terested. It suggests the reeled of Shallow Bay. betwee^T? 1 ’ Creek and Pollen s Island, and out that the bay is completely dVr* high tide, and. being well a w*y , « the harbour entrance and the ~ run of traffic on the harbour si?; not interfere with the natural hL* ties of the harbour. By erecting a bank following ~ contour of the western side of o.r creek channel, and keeping abo«h water mark round to Pollen's 1.1 500 acres at least could be reclaim!; including Pollen's Island, To „ y" A\ hich no doubt could be acquired fr, ' the Avondale borough. 11055 Road access could be provided frn the main North Road, either fa,where it curves at the mental hospi-? or just south of the Oakley <w bridge, and rail access from itonur ' side through the asylum ground" across the concrete road overhead - to the area. On the reclaimed area it is suggest that an esplanade should be forint right round the foreshore chajL' and probably a road direct from C junction with the main North Roai along with rail connection to Poller Point, which, with a bridge aero* th* Whau. would eventually provide « second road outlet from the city : the north. The area between **l
road and rail and the harbour bank, say some 300 acres, would be the industrial area. Easy access by tram, as soon as ti* City Council completes its tracks to Point Chevarier, by road from the concrete in North Road or New North Road, through Avondale, by rail as suggested, without any heavy grades, and further, the close proximity of Point Chevalier, by road from the cocetc., all largely workers’ residential areas, and a practically unlimited arte of cheap land for workers’ homes jur. across the Whau, would permit of i large residential working population close to the industrial area, without overcrowding. This feature was one which the Hubson Bay area totally lacked.
