THE KING’S CUP SEVENTEEN COMPETITORS LIEUTENANT HOPE WINS By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright LONDON, Saturday. There were 17 starters in the air Derby for the King’s Cup. They included Lady Bailey. Ten entrants withdrew and eight, including Mrs. Elliot Lynn, did not start. The latter all protested against the new handicap formula including the wing span on the ground that it was unfair. The result was: i'A ie V ten ? I l t Ho P e . in ade Haviliana Moth, 1, with an average speed of y<s.o miles an hour. Flight-Lieutenant Macmanough,, in a Westland Widgeon, 2, with an average speed of 102.8 miles. Flight-Lieutenant E. R. C. Scholefield, in a Vickers Vixen, 3, with an average speed of 141.6 miles. Lady Bailey descended owing to valve trouble. Mr. Bert Hinkler, the Australian airman, who was No. 13, did not start, owing to a carburetter defect. The Tiger Moth of last year’s winner, Captain Hubert Broad, created chief interest in the race. On its first appearance it attained a speed of 166 miles an hour, but Captain Broad was forced to land, owing to heavy weather. —A. and N.Z.-Sun.
Previous results of the race are:— 1922. —Won by F. L. Barnard, in a D.H.4, 350 Rolls Royce (23 entries, 21 started, 11 completed course). 1923. —Won by F. Courtney in a “Siskin,” 385 h.p. Armstrong Siddeley (17 entries, 14 started, 7 completed). 1924. —Won by Alan Cobham in a D.H.50, 230 h.p. Siddeley (10 entries, 10 started, 6 completed). 1925. —Won by F. L. Barnard in a “Siskin,” 385 h.p. Armstrong Siddeley (15 entries, 14 started, 3 completed). 1926. —Won by Captain Hubert S. Broad in a 30 h.p. de Havilland Moth (14 started, 5 completed).
