THE NEW REGENT

“NEW YORK” Large crowds were in evidence at the New Regent Theatre on Saturday, when the Paramount picture, “New York,” was screened. “New York” opens in a Bowery dive. Cortez, Powell, “Skeets” Gallagher, and Lester Scharff are introduced as a quartette who have grown to manhood on the city’s east side. The first has become a jazz drummer, Gallagher (making a very acceptable screen debut) is his pianist; Powell has developed into a typical gangster, and Scharff is entering politics. It is then that Cortez meets Lois Wilson, a girl of the “four hundred.” He determines to raise himself to her level. Five years later things have changed. Cortez is now a well-known “Tin Pan Alleyist.” And this time, when the son of the Bowery greets the daughter of Park Avenue, it is she who proposes to him. Then, an old sweetheart is found murdered in his room. Coming from the smooth flowing pens of Barbara Chambers and Becky Gardiner, “New York” is as exciting and hectic a tale as the city itself. A splendid cast, headed by Ri'cardo Cortez, Lois Wilson, Estelle Taylor (Mrs. Jack Dempsey), William Powell, and Norman Trevor, enacts the thrilling story.
