CYCLING ROAD RACES AT MANGERE
DWIGHT WINS TIME TRIAL A PROTEST ENTERED The races lie-id by the Auckland Athletic and Cycling Club and the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club on Saturday were responsible for some new names figuring on the prize list. The Manukau Amateur Cycling Club’s s£-mile junior event attracted a field of 11 starters, and two riders whose names did not appear among the original handicaps, F. G. Keenan and L. Rollerson, rode first arid second. The race was run in slow time, no one seemingly being anxious to make the pace. The back-markers, G. Rose, R. Foubister and S. Litchfield—the last named starting fro *rthe scratch mark for the first time—did not ride with their usual brilliancy as the time, 17min 30 sec, proves. The winner, F. G. Keenan, won very easily. Pie looks the makings of a good boy. He sits his machine well, and is one of the best pedallers seen at Mangere. The following are the results: —F. G. Keenan, 3min, 1; L. Rollerson, 3min, 2; R. Capp. 45sec, 3; D. Hope, 45sec, 4. Time, 17min 30sec. Fastest Mine, 15min 16sec., G. Rose, scr. There were 11 starters. Won by 50 yards, a similar distance between second and third. SURPRISE IN 27-MILE EVENT The 27-mile sealed handicap was also a time trial event. The course was to Papatoetoe through" Tamaki and back. Twenty-four riders took part, and the race was responsible for some big “surprises,” no less than three doing faster time than M. P. Byrne. The roads were in fair condition, being a bit sloppy in places. The backmarkers started first, starting in order of merit. M. P. Byrnes, the first rider away, sang out “Goodbye, Galbraith,” as he disappeared round the corner. 11. Dwight, the second rider away, made no mistake about getting off the mark. He set out more as if he was in a mile race than a 27-mile one. C. Galbraith, who followed Dwight, and most of the back-markers, moved off as if they all meant business. The race was late in finishing, some of the riders arriving at the finishing post well after 4.30 p.m. PI. Dwight, the winner, rode the distance in 1 hour 16min 50 3-ssee, an average of just a shade under 21 miles an hour. He is riding in his best form at present, and by finishing Ymin 14sec ahead of C. Galbraith, and lmin 48 2-ssec ahead of M. P. Byrnes, his performance is a vei'y fine one. The surprise of the bunch was H. McElroy, who finished third. He rode the 27 miles in 1 hour 18min 40sec, beating Byrnes by 9sec. . The following are the judge’s placings:—H. Dwight, 1 hour 16min 50 3-5 sec, 1; C. Galbraith, 1 hour 18rnin 4sec, 2; IT. McElroy, 1 hour 18min 40seo, 3; M. P. Byrnes, 1 hour 18min 49 sec, 4. A protest has been entered conjointly by Byrnes and Galbraith against Dwight the winner, on the ground that he was paced by a motor-car. The result of the sealed handicap run in conjunction with the time trial was as follows: —W. Boreland, 1; H. McElroy, 2; J. Wade, 3; A. W. Pinker, 4. P. Platt fell in this race, receiving a severe shaking, together with some nasty cuts. He collided with A. Brennan, a cash rider, at Robinson’s corner. THE CASH DIVISION The Auckland Athletic and Cycling Club held a 20-mile open handicap event, which attracted 16 starters. The front division again succeeded in getting away with the four places. It was a* well-contested race, the front markers pacing each other in great style. The back markers made every post a winning one, but they could not get a view of the front bunch, which comprised Francis, Rae, Pelham and Storey. Over the lap the back markers, Hayes, Prior, White, Sutherland, Henderson and Matheson put in some very fine work, but the handicaps proved too much, and they were finally beaten by a good margin. Coming up the Mangere Hill, Rae led Storey, with Francis on his wheel. This order was maintained till within 50 yards from the finishing line, when Storey (4min) put in a few kicks which landed him the winner by a length from Rae, 3min 30sec. The scratch division appeared soon after, White beating Prior by a few inches for fastest time. Allan Brennan, who was appearing for htc first time since his bad accident a few weeks back, again struck trouble. He collided with another cyclist at Robinson Road corner, coming down heavily. He received a number of cuts and bruises, but none were of a serious nature. H. Pelham (4min 30sec) had bad luck in breaking his machine before the start of the rac£. He rode a strange one, which did not suit him, causing him to pull out early. The following are the results: —Storey, 4min, 1: Rae, 3min 30sec., 2; Francis, 6min 30sec, 3: Dean, 7min 30sec, 4. Time, olmin 13sec. Fastest time, P. White, scr., 56min 46sec.
