MOTHER BIRD’S SACRIFICE
BURNED TO DEATH ON NEST A hen linnet’s sacrifice was revealed in a heath fire at Church Crookham, England, recently. Members of the fire brigade noticed a cock linnet chirping excitedly, and found in a charred gorse bush a burnt nest containing five eggs. Still sitting on them was the body of the mother bird, which had been burnt to death rather than desert her brood.
