ATIAMURI SETTLEMENT

ACCESS IMPOSSIBLE Three men who were successful in the ballot for land adjoining the Atiamuri Road, journeyed to their prospective farms hoping to be able to put up a temporary shelter preparatory to the construction of permanent homes. They found the road so cut to pieces by the extra traffic thrown upon it through the closing of the Mamaku Road, that neither building material, stores nor food supplies could reach them. The men found themselves marooned and in an unenviable predicament, but fortunately a hospitable farmer some distance away came to their assistance and very generously offered both food and shelter until they could return to Rotorua. The question presents itself: Who is to repair the road? Nominally under the control of the county council, that body collects no rates for the reason there is no one in the vicinity to collect rates from. It is thought that the Government may effect repairs at comparatively small cost and until this is done, or a dry spell of weather sets in, the three impatient and successful balloters cannot begin the work of breaking in their farms.
