HERNE BAY SLIP
STILL ON THE MOVE RESTORATION OF DWELLING YI7ITH scaffolding and cables* workmen are endeavouring to restore the stability of Mr. A. J. Billington’s house in Sentinel Road, Herne Bay, where a serious land subsidence has occurred. The land appears to be still on the move, but is expected to consolidate if there is no further heavy rain. The fissure passes under the middle of Mr. Billington’s house, which was serious strained when the front foundations dropped with the slipping land. To avert risk, the occupants left the house, furniture was removed, and a front chimney dismantled. Window frames were affected by the subsidence, and will not close. The plan now is to level up the building by lifting the front part, beneath which a scaffolding of beams has been erected. The section is on a fairly easy slope, and there seems to be no risk of its slipping completely away. Hopes are entertained that the moving earth will find its own level of stability, allowing the house to be restored, and its occupation resumed. BOWLING CLUB SUFFERS SUBSIDENCE AT GREY LYNN The heavy rain during the week caused a serious subsidence in a builtup bank at the Grey Lynn Bowling Club’s new green on the Faulder estate, Surrey Crescent. While not affecting any of the greens, the collapsed bank will cost about £ 100 to restore, and a stone wall, to prevent a recurrence, may have to be erected.
