N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP HOCKEY TOURNEY
OPENS ON MONDAY | The tournament of the New Zealand ; Hockey Challenge Shield will com--1 mence at the Remuera Grounds on : Monday at 3 pm. The withdrawal of Canterbury and Wellington has robbed , the tournament of much interest, but nevertheless some games should be witnessed between the teams remaining in the tournament. On Monday the Auckland Country team will play Waikato in the first round, while Auckland has drawn the bye. On Wednesday Waikato will play Auckland with the Auckland Country team the bye. On Tuesday Auckland and the Auckland Country team will try conclusions. So as to have the ground in as good order as possible the committee has decided that no games shall be played on No. 1 ground to-day. TWO TEAMS WITHDRAW (.Special to THE SUN.} CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. At a meeting of the New Zealand Hockey Association letters were received from Wellington and Canterbury regretting that on account of players being unavailable, both associations were compelled to withdraw their entries for the Challenge Shield. The Canterbury Association’s offer to send a team to meet the winners of the Auckland v. Waikato match was mentioned, but nothing definite has been decided upon.
