STORY COMPETITION

A special short story competition is announced for Sunbeams who have not previously won a prize. The entries, which should be written on only one side of the paper, should be limited to 300 words and should reach the Dawn Lady, Happy Town, SUN Office, Auckland, not later than August 13. A first and second book prize will be awarded, these being presented by Stout Heart, a Chief of the Wigwam, who also reads the Happy Town page. rr. rl- r!r fir rh rl~ rh rl- rr, rvt xi rr, rk rh rk r!~ FROM A SUNBEAM The day was rather* cold and wintry when we left Waiotahi, and dark clouds were in banks to the east of us, but the sun was shining - . In front of us, and on every side, loomed high, misty blue hills —bush clad, but here and there a shining patch could, be seen, where once a land-slide had occurred and now water streamed down its face, sparkling and glimmering in the sunlight. If only the sun had not gone under a large rain cloud, I might have seen the Gorge in all its winter beauty—but I saw it as it is, when the clouds strew the azure skies. It was rather pretty—the river slowly running over a shallow ford and rippling gently to the deeper parts. Bush grew luxuriantly on every side, while gay little fantails and blackbirds flittered from branch to branch. —Dorothy Bramley (aged 14). PUZZERS Word square: 1— A loud noise. 2 A Wide space. 3 Trim 4 A barred entrance. WHAT AM I? Take from me one letter, and yet my good name In spite of this loss will continue the same; Take from me two letters, and still you will see That precisely the same as before I shall be; Take from me three letters, take six, or take more, Yet still I continue the same-as before. * * * Answers to last week’s puzzlers: Word Square: Rope, Otic, Pith, Echo. Hidden Furniture: Bookcase, Escritoire, Divan, Chair, Sideboard. A boy’s will is the wind’s will, And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts. —Longfellow.
