INDIAN’S VICTORY
Beating a field of 130 white men, among whom there were many speedy runners, Nicolas Quanawahu, a Hopi Indian snake priest from a Pueblo village at Oraibi, Arizona, established a new American record by doing the New York to Long Beach marathon in 2 hours 47 minutes 43 1-5 seconds recently, states an American paper. He broke through the finish tape almost ; 300 yards ahead of the second man. | His accomplishment was considered especially remarkable in view of the j fact that he had had but a few days | of training before performing the j feat, and in addition was competing j in but his second long-distance run. As a usual thing those who take part in such events start in weeks i ahead of the trials to get their lungs j and legs in proper condition to withstand the great strain to which they are to be subjected. None of those people who had been making estimates of probable winner had looked on Quanawahu as likely to be the victor. He is 24 years old and unmarried.
