Canadians Repeat Test Match Score
GAME AT WHANGAREI N. AUCKLAND’S GOOD FIGHT (•From Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, To-day. Wretched weather prevailed for the match of the Canadian Soccer team against North Auckland at Kensington Park. Rain fell until the closing stages and the ground was very soft. From 1,400 to 1,500 spectators witnessed the match. The opening play gave promise of some interesting fare in ball control. Experts like Patrick and Ackers were quickly on their game, and one of their first moves led to Patrick sending over a cross which Hazel narrowly missed. For ten minutes exchanges were fairly equal. The Canadians were working up a certain liveliness, but the North Auckland backs were keeping them
away from the goalkeeper. After 25 minutes play, North Auckland took the lead. Caldwell carried the ball down, and beating Crawley, crossed to Hazel, who finished with an excellent drive which beat Tait all the way. North Auckland 1, Canada, 0. The Canadians were the aggressors after half-time, and a rush in which Monaghan, Archibald and Gibson took part ended in the last-named scoring with a strong shot, bringing the scores equal. Archibald netted Canada’s second goal, the ball striking one of the defenders and passing into the net. Canada 2, North Auckland 1. The home
side rallied again, but the Maple Leafers soon resumed their grip, and Davidson registered number three goal. If anything, the visitors were doing the bulk of the attacking, but the home defence seemed to have a firm grip on the visiting forwards. Near the end, Archibald increased Canada’s lead, the game ending: Canada 4 North Auckland 1 Notes and Comments The North Auckland team played well, and was only beaten by the same score as in last Saturday’s test match. Every player came out with credit. Newton was brilliant in goal, and made some splendid saves. The backs, Taylor and Hellers, proved themselves worthy of their selection, while Mills, Rodgers and Keating were a half-line equal 1:o the visitors’ halves, and held the Canadian forwards well. The forwards had little chance on the muddy ground, but were game, and at times showed some good footwork. On a faster ground they would have given the visitors a lot of trouble. A medal presented by Mr. J. Makinson. manager of the Hikurangi mine, for the North Auckland player adjudged to play the best game against the Canadians was awarded by the manager of the visiting side, Mr. J. Adam, to Newton, of X.M.C.A. Club, the North Auckland custodian. The presentation was made at the celebration dinner after the match. Newton, in returning thanks, said he had learned his football with the famous Bolton (Lancashire) Soccer Club. PROFESSIONAL GOLF LONDON, Wednesday.
