HOUSTON MILLIONS

DEATH DUTIES QUESTION WIDOW’S “ACT OF GRACE” By Cable. —Press Association. —Copyright LONDON, Thursday.

Lady Houston, widow of the late Sir Robert P. Houston, the shipping magnate, has telegraphed to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Churchill, stating that she desires, as an act of grace, to present to the Government her liability in respect of the death duties on ner late husband’s estate. At the same time Lady Houston says it is a mistake to assume that her husband’s fortune was made in England. Most of it was made in South America, she says. Moreover, there is no denying the fact that he was domiciled in Jersey when he died. Lady Houston’s telegram follows a recent statement in Parliament to the effect that the Inland Revenue Department’s claim (which, it is understood, was to be contested on the ground of domicile) was being pressed. Sir Robert left an estate valued at £7,000,000 and the duties are estimated at about £3,000,000. —A. and N.Z.
