DERBY CANDIDATES
HAMPERED IN PREPARATION WANT WORK ON THE GRASS Once again, in justice to those engaged in the preparation of candidates for the light harness season now approaching in Auckland, we feel the necessity of urging upon the Auckland executive the desirability of allowing horses to be worked occasionally on the outside of the grass circuit. At the spring fixture the Great Northern Derby will come up for decision, and Auckland enthusiasts are hoping to produce aspirants that will uphold the prestige of the province. SOUTHERN ADVANTAGE Unfortunately, our three-year-olds will be lack in experience, and will suffer in comparison with Southern candidates, who have had some racing, and also the advantage of grass track work. There can be no harm, surely, in the Auckland ground committee allowing Derby candidates a little latitude, at least in the direction of an occasional work-out on the turf on which they will be asked to meet all-comers.
