The totalisator handled £9.266, against £13,813 on the first day last year, but on that occasion there were eight races, compared with seven to-day. Later results are: GISBORNE STEEPLECHASE, 3 Miles. FOR INDIA A.J.C. STIPENDIARY ENGAGED BY CALCUTTA CLUB In all probability Mr. J. Higgins, who will retire from his position as chairman of the Australian Jockey Club stipendiary stewards on October 15, will resume his active connection with racing in India. Mr. Higgins has been a stipendiary steward in India twice before, and left there to take his present position with the Australian Jockey Club. Since liis present resignation became known he has had three offers of the position of steward, one of them, from the Royal Calcutta Turf Club. This he has accepted, although certain details have yet to be completed. In Calcutta Mr. Higgins will act purely in an advisory capacity to the committee. The racing season is now in full swing there, and Mr. Higgins will not begin his duties till next season. He will thus be able to take the holiday he promised himself before he gets into harness again.
