another tall pile SOUTH BRITISH BUILDING ANCIENT warehouse to go TENDERS will soon be called for the erection of a new block „f offices for the South British Insurance Company. The building w il| be erected on the site of Nathan’S old premises, on the corner of High Street and Short|a id Street. Tenants occupying; parts of Nathan’s huildinsr have been given notice to nove, and the old brick building will soon ha under the breaker’s hammer. Built in the fifties, it was at one rime Auckland’s most imposing commercial building, and was constructed 0 f bricks imported from England. TOWERING PILE Of a different character will be the eight-storey reinforced concrete structure to replace it. Rising 100 feet above the pavement, it will be a towering twin to the Yorkshire building opnosite. and will give the locality a Greater uniform loftiness than is to be seen elsewhere in the city. Faced in light-coloured stone, and of imposing architectural proportions, the new building will be a worthy addition. On the ground floor will be the South British Company’s head office, with the first floor occupied by the Guardian Trust offices. The various floors will be served bythree elevators, rising from a spacious an d richly-panelled vestibule on the ground floor. The main entrance will be on Shortland Street, at the end nearest to Queen Street, with a wide (light of steps leading from the pavement to the entrance hall.
