A FIVER

MASTER MIND’S PRICE SOLD AT AUCTION TO-DAY Thought enough of as a two-year-old to run in classics, the brown gelding was to-day sold at auction for a fiver. So have the mighty fallen, or rather a horse that was considered up to classic races but was afterwards proven to be a great disappointment. In his first public appearance on the racecourse Master Mind was started in the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, a £I,OOO babies’ classic, and against such smart ones as Automne, Hyde Park, The Thorn (the place-getters). Gold Acre, Oration, Merry Damon and Circulation he was mildly fancied. ONCE THIRD At Takapuna later in the season Master Mind finished third to King’s Speech and Nastori, and that was promising enough for his then lady owner. Mrs. J. Hughes. However,, that was the last time he ran into a place at two years, and the next season he did not contest a single race. This season he raced in the colours of Mr. W. M. Taylor, and on the track gave glimpses of pace. At the Waikato spring fixture he ran third to Joy Germ and Bright Comet in a field of 2S. Strange that these place-get-ters have not done much good since then, while many that finished behind them have won many races. THREE IN AN AFTERNOON Four months ago Master Mind was taken to Tauranga to compete at the Bay of Plenty meeting, and right well did he play his part, even if he failed to burn up the tracks. In his first start he ran third, was second the next time, but the third outing on this occasion disproved the proverb, for the master was unplaced. At Te Rapa a month later Master Mind finished third the first day in the Trial to Catapult and Royal Doulton. A hundred yards from home he looked all over a winner, but then he col lapsed. Since then he has been off the scene. Now Master Mind’s new owner, Mr. Kelly, has got hold of a speedy horse in the Lucullus —Avon Park four-year-old, but there is evidently a weakness somewhere in the horse’s constitution that has kept him from the winning list.
