WAIPA RUGBY UNION

PEACE CUP CHALLENGES (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE AWAMUTU, Tuesday. The weekly meeting of the Waipa Rugby Union took place on Monday evening. The president, Mr. F. Quin, presided and there were also present: Messrs. J. G. B. Gifford, E. T. Crump, G. B. Melrose, A. A. Reese, G. F. Reynolds, S. A. McNamara, G. W. Mairs, W. Whitton, H. T. Haselden, W. McCarthy, W. Cavanagh, G. S. Clarke, and W. M. Winter, honorary secretary. The Waikato Rugby Union forwarded a list of dates for Peace Cup challenges. Owing to the number of challengers it had been decided to ask some of the sub-unions to play off for the right to challenge the holders. The chairman did not think the play off would be satisfactory. It was decided to ask Matamata to play their match against Waipa on August 13. Some discussion took place on the proposed trip to Auckland of a junior representative team to play the Eden Club’s third grade team that visited Te Awamutu last year. A committee was appointed to make arrangements for the Auckland trip. Cambridge Rugby Union asked for a return junior representative match with Waipa at Cambridge on July 30, their own Boyce Cup challenge having been set down for August 6. Referred to sub-committee.

Mr. Gifford, who has been a keen worker in the interests of Rugby, tendered his resignation. Matter deferred for a week.

The secretary of the Auckland TTniversity College Club forwarded a letter

from the Fiji Rugby Union, indicating that the proposed tour by a Fijian team had been abandoned, owing to the inability of several players to obtain leave.

Various details in connection with the King Country versus Waikato representative match on August 6, at Te Awamutu, were arranged. Appreciation of the services rendered by the Rev. S. C. Burrow to the union was placed on record and good wishes were expressed for his success at Cambridge.
