MR. WALTER A. GALE DEAD By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright SYDNEY, Wednesday. The sudden death occurred to-day ot' Mr. Walter Augustus Gale, Clerk of the Federal House of Representatives at Canberra. The cause of death was heart failure. Mr. Gale was the author of many popular songs and of a famous wartime recruiting song.—A. and N.Z. Mr. Walter Augustus Gale was born at Gerald ton in 1864. He was educated at St. Peter’s College, Adelaide, and Exeter College, Oxford. He entered the Colonial Secretary’s Office of Western Australia in ISB6. He was Secretary to the Central Board of Education for some years and in 1901 was appointed Clerk-Assistant of the House of Representatives, and in 1917 Clerk of the House. He wrote many songs and verses, including “Play the Game,” of which over 100.000 copies were circulated as an aid to recruiting at the time of the war. He was at one time athletic champion of Western Australia.
