Soccer m Australia.—The match between South Maitland and the touring Chinese team resulted in a draw—three goals each.—A. and N.Z. Bridge Subsidy.—The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. K. S. Williams, has informed the Raetihi Borough Council that he cannot increase the subsidy for the Makotuku Bridge beyond £1 for £3. Much-Broken Order.—Ernest Walton, aged 34, who appeared at the Police Court to-day, was fined £3, in default seven days’ imprisonment, for drunkenness. For the third breach of his prohibition order be was fined £4, in default 14 days’ imprisonment. Mangawaro Drainage.—Very successful drainage work has been accomplished by the Mangawara River Road. The river has been deepened and straightened over a distance of 13i miles and flooding largely diminished. World Poultry Congress.—Five thousand were present at the opening of the World Poultry Congress at Ottawa. Forty-two countries and five continents were represented. Viscount Willingdon, Governor-General of Canada, gave a welcome on behalf of the British Empire.—A. and N.Z. Progress At Pokeno.—A Chamber of Commerce has been formed at Pokeno and the following officers elected: President, Mr. A. F. Byers; vice-presi-dents and committeemen, Messrs. G. Rodgers, G. Byers, F. Kelsel, J. Woodcock, senr.. E. Nixon; secretary and treasurer, Mr. C. Halford; auditor, Mr. F. Woodcock. Presentation to Policeman.—Sergeant S. Brown, who has been a member of the Newton police staff for over five years, has been transferred to Parnell. He was last night presented with a leather suitcase by Senior-Sergeant Lanagan on behalf of the staff. The ceremony took place at the Newton Police Station, about 20 officials being present.
