Schooling at Riccarton

Maunga and Zircon set out to school together over eight of the schooling steeplechase fences at Riccarton on Saturday morning, but Zircon, who went to the front, ran off the first four, and was pulled up. Maunga gave a capital showing, one that left no doubt as to his ability to

jump the National country. He is clever and quick. Unfortunately he is showing signs of lameness behind. Zircon was galloped a mile. He was not all out, and the time, lmin 49sec, was reasonably good. He looks well seasoned and muscular.

Kept for the North The withdrawal of Lord Star from the Grand National Hurdle Race and other races at Riccarton will be disappointing for backers of that horse at Trentham, and they will have to wait for some of the Northern meetings to recoup their losses on him. writes “Vedette.” He was particularly well placed in the big jumping race at Riccarton, but there are so many good prizes on offer in the North that owner-trainer R. Hannon decided against the expensive trip to Riccarton.
