PRISONER ESCAPES
DASH FROM TRAIN ON WAY TO MOUNT EDEN advantage of the confusion which reigned after the passengers had been transhipped at the Karaka cutting this morning, a prisoner escaped from the train at Puhinui. The escaped man is William Scholes, who was on his way, under escort with other prisoners, from Wellington to the Mount Eden Gaol. After the passengers got into the relief train at the Auckland end of the Karaka slip all the available accommodation was taken up. Many passengers were collected at all the small stations on the way to Auckland. At Puhinui, near Papatoetoe, Scholes took advantage of the crowded train to make a break for liberty. He had not been captured at noon. All the surrounding police stations have been notified and a search party is out. Scholes is an English labourer, aged 36. He is sft 6Jin in height, has a fresh complexion, blue eyes and a scar above the left eye. When he escaped he was wearing a blue velour overcoat and a light fawn felt hat and black shoes.
